Purchasing a rug is a major budget item, and it should be. It will truly dictate the style of your space. In the end, the payout is worth it, because your room will look FINISHED, as though the rug has always been there!
Some of our favorite rug sources are Overstock and Rugs USA, both online vendors. Most have a generous return policy, but there are ways of ensuring you get it right the first time. First, measure your room and determine the best size for your space. Stock/regular sizes are 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12. Most of the options are rectangular shape, but consider a square rug or even a round one. We like wool rugs, because they will last for a long time and are easy to clean. The "indoor/outdoor" rug has come a long way! They can work well in a high-traffic area like entryway or hallway or kitchen.
It's best to purchase the biggest rug you can for the space ::: you don't want it to feel like a postage stamp sitting in the middle of the floor, surrounded by your furnishings. A rug should help to integrate the hard and soft surfaces in your room. If the front feet of your sofa and/or chairs can sit on the rug, so much the better.
